Boys that watch porn online ‘more likely to harass girls’

According to a study by Australian researchers, boys who are exposed to pornography at a young age are more inclined to believe there is nothing wrong with harassing a girl for sex.

The study by the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (which collected data from 8 countries) also suggests that boys exposed to porn are more likely to indulge in casual sex – and less likely to form successful relationships as adults.

Whilst sexually explicit material can form part of a young person’s sexual education, there is a concern that internet porn is often a very poor role model, showing sex in an unrealistic light and failing to address love, intimacy or romance.  It is noted that porn can often be quite callous in it’s depiction of women.  It is this imbalance that can have the worst effect on the impressionable young mind.

A study into sexual habits in the UK suggests that 60% of boys under 16 have been exposed to porn and the average age at which they first experience porn is just 11 years old.  The same study reveals that the boys spent 90 minutes a week watching porn on the internet.

John Carr, a government advisor, points out that these statistics should not be used as a reason to “ban” pornography, rather as an argument for making it harder for young people to get hold of.

What are your young boys watching online?
