Sky News reports today on a frightening new trend amongst children and young people in the UK.
The craze, nicknamed ‘Space Monkey’ and originating in the US and France, involves young people strangling themselves (or their friends) in order to achieve a ‘high’ when the stranglehold is released.
The practice causes asphyxia, which can result in unconsciousness, brain damage and even death.
There are no official figures for how many children may have died or been hospitalised whilst taking part in the practice, but the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 86 children may have died in the UK in the last 10 years as a result of choking themselves in this way.
Young people are then sharing the videos of themselves indulging in the dangerous practice on video sharing websites like YouTube, and discussing techniques and their experiences on blogs and forums.
This could be the only way that parents can discover whether their children are taking part.
Are your children engaging in dangerous activities and posting the results online? Perhaps it’s time to find out…
