According to a survey commissioned by New Media Age Magazine, children as young as six are using the internet to illegally download or stream US TV shows before they are aired in the UK.
Popular US TV shows such as Glee, Heroes, Lost, House and The Simpsons can easily be downloaded shortly after they air in the US. It is often several weeks before the same episodes air on UK TV channels.
Of the 4,347 children between the ages of 6 and 14 surveyed, 31% admitted that they regularly watch TV programs illegally, either by downloading or “streaming” them. 16% admitted to downloading films in the same way before their UK release.
Parents should be aware that, if their children are using the internet in this way, they could potentially be liable for their child’s copyright infringement. Children could also, of course, gain access to TV programmes that are unsuitable for their age in this way.
One example of this is the TV series Dexter, which is based around a forensics expert-turned-serial-killer and contains gruesome and shocking scenes of violence and murder. Shows such as Dexter are available on these illegal sites alongside family favourites such as The Simpsons.
Are your children illegally downloading potentially harmful TV programs and films online? Isn’t it time you found out?
